Industrial biotechnology ("White Biotechnology") utilizes microorganisms or enzymes for large-scale production of substances like specialty chemicals and fine chemicals, agrochemical and pharmaceutical products, industrial additives, and, increasingly, bulk chemicals and fuels. Industrial biotechnology is focussed on the chemical industry utilizing renewable raw materials. Aim is to selectively convert these renewable raw materials into value-added products by use of biocatalysts.
The TUM Research Center for Industrial Biotechnology is an institution which is associated with academic members (Professors) of three faculties of Technische Universität München. The main technical facility is the TUM Pilot Plant for Industrial Biotechnology located in Garching near Munich.
